Final Post

As you can probably see from my past posts, I'm not the greatest writer when it comes to expressing my thoughts, but I would like to start this mini-crit by saying that this was by far my most favorite site of all the finished projects. There is creativity, originality, and a feeling of a free spirit to the attitude given. I like how even though during the first scene, you don't get a clear understanding of what is going on as a whole (even though, yes, I do understand the concepts of each mini-movie) when you get to the scene above, it's a beautiful and comical experience for those few moments. Here is the creative artsy side of me coming through: I love the color scheme. The artists broke through the normal bearier and mixed pastel with bright neon colors. Normally, I would have frowned upon, but it works wonders here. The motion tweens that were made in Flash are spot on, expecially with the robot. I want to research how Tim was able to make the robots arms and legs move so smoothly.

But to wrap things up, yes, it may not make 100% complete sense, but the group executed a fun, creative movie that was awesome.

My Boyfriend Came Back From The War, Olia Lialina, 1996

- What I think the artist is trying to show in this site is the disconnection between her and her significant other who is away at war. I'm taking away from this site with a very literal attitude, thinking that this is website is basically a dialogue between her and her lover when he returns from war and finds out that she/he has cheated (wasn't really made clear who) and that everything is somehow made better and by then end of the links, he/she asks the other for their hand in marriage.
The structure of the website is interesting. You start off with a few grainy pictures and I can almost not make out what they are exactly. You are then directed through a series of questions and answers that barely make any sense because they are completely random.

Phone

Halbeath, Young Hae Chag, 2001

- I believe what the artist is trying to explain that the world is falling apart. The world is suffering from globalism and how we should embrace that the internet is here to connect us all together as one. She says it straight forward by saying that if we don't come together, we will fail if we try to take more than ten steps.
I think that the phone represents the internet as the medium of the social networking that is connecting us all together. I also believe the "hill" is a place or state of mind where we all meet.

10/23 Project 2 Influence

Choose two pieces of art we have discussed in class (or linked to from the class blog) so far and describe how these pieces will influence your next project, Project II.

- Our story based on the joke of the priest, minister and rabbi who walk into a bar is meant to be funny with a narrative behind the joke. I'm not 100% sure if this was intentional to be funny, but from my point of view, it comes across a bit comical. There is also a story behind what the author is showing, in which I could be wrong, but I perceive as a journey through a man's life. It's not parallel to our story, but the concepts are working closely together between the two sites.

- Same as above except that I know that there has to be some humor in her work since she has a picture of a man that looks as if to be a profile picture, and I'm almost positive 13 year old girls in Amsterdam don't have facial hair.

10/6 Communication Creates Conflict Heath Bunting, 1995

Communication Creates Conflict Heath Bunting, 1995

What are some of the ways that the authors chose to represent the places and events in the projects below?
- The author represented "cybercafe" as a vehicle to communicate with other human beings, not necessarily knowing who they are. For example, when you clik the first link "say", the next page tells you that it's a fax that is currently out of service. When you click the link "en" (penetration) it takes you to a page that offers you to send a postcard, free of charge, to a complete stranger, who apparently likes to receive postcards. Also, I haven't personally been to Tokyo, but the author makes Tokyo seem as a place that has lots of terrorists and expensive food when I read his description of the area.

What are some characteristics of these representations that are specific to the medium of the internet?
- The internet is a medium used constantly for social networking and information. The site gives links to different forms of communication as well as personal information about Tokyo.

Boogie Woogie Wonderland

Boogie Woogie Wonderland; Mike Bode, Staffan Shmidt, John Miller, Akira Mori, Sean Snyder, Ola Pehrson, Takuji Kogo, Tetsu Takagi; November 1, 2003; http://artonline.jp/BGWG/

The artist seems to be proving the importance of words in his documentary. They are flashed up on the screen first and then take their place on the back of the screen. They tell a story in the order they are displayed on the screen. Personally, I didn't enjoy the screen because of the flashing letters. I feel that the order that they came on the screen and how they came to the back of the screen was crafty, but the flashing was distracting.

- The website seems to be a continuous flash movie that repeats itself. All that is shown is different glyphs of the same font. They come up on the screen one at a time. I believe what the artist is trying to achieve is the beauty of typography and how each individual letter is a work of art in it's own light.
